As many of you know, the United Sates Senate recently voted in favor of the bill proposing the construction of a 700-mile fence along the US-Mexico border, the so-called "Secure Fence Act of 2006." We would like to thank Senator Dick Durbin for his vote against the bill, continuing a long record of support for immigrants' rights and for our community's pursuit of the American dream. While the current political makeup of congress did not lead those engaged in the fight for immigrants' rights to be particularly hopeful about the outcome of the bill, we were shocked and saddened to learn that Senator Barack Obama, who has previously spoken out in favor of immigrant rights, suddenly reversed positions and voted with the Senate's Republican majority. Not only is this act sending the wrong message about the hardworking, family-oriented individuals in our community, but it is also an ineffective measure designed for political pandering instead of true immigration reform. As long as economic conditions in Mexico and other Latin American countries warrant, immigrants will continue to come to the US in search of better lives for our families. Not only is this movement a reality of the current global economy, but it is also an important factor in the enrichment of life in the United States. The construction of a 700-foot "security fence" will only serve to put immigrants in greater danger as they make their journey to the United States.
